Nottingham City Centre

Nottingham City Centre is the central area of Nottingham, and the Greater Nottingham conurbation as a whole. The area has seen a great deal of investment and redevelopment in recent years and is consistently rated amongst the top five shopping districts in the United Kingdom (outside of London).  It is where the city's major railway station, Council House and main shopping centres are located. Nottingham Express Transit trams run through the area, terminating at Station Street.

The undisputed central feature of the city centre is the Old Market Square, right at the heart of the city. This is undergone a major redevelopment programme which was completed in March 2007. Most of the main shopping streets are based around the square which is dominated by The Council House, whose landmark dome can be seen for miles around. Much of the ground floor of the Council House is taken up by the Exchange Arcade, a shopping centre of boutique stores.

A thriving bohemian quarter of the city known as Hockley has arisen in recent years, situated close to the Lace Market area.

Nottingham Old Market Square on Light NightOrganised by Nottingham City Council in partnership with Nottingham BID (Business Improvement District), Light Night aims to bring something special to visitors by allowing them to access the city's cultural offer late into the night and to give families an opportunity to do something different.

The evening kicks off with a choir of 500 children from all over Nottingham coming together to perform a concert in Old Market Square under the big 'Wheel of Nottingham'. Their voices will serenade riders on the Wheel offering them stunning view of the city and beyond as they are lifted high above the Council House.

Nottingham Council House and Nottingham Eye on Light NightOn the night you'll be able to follow trails of illuminations, interact with light installations and seek out the quiet sectors of the city such as Nottingham Castle, St. Mary's Church and Bromley House that are not normally visited at night. Listen to members of the public play the piano at the Theatre Royal and go on a ghost tour of Nottingham Playhouse. Watch street performances and late night films at Broadway, celebrate Chinese New year by hanging a lantern and much, much more.

Nottingham's Goddess will be parading in the street with her entourage of dancers and musicians. See some of Nottingham's top Fencers as they demonstrate their skill and try your hand at the magic of physics.

Love your city and take part in Light Night as love will be in the air and you'll be guaranteed to fall in love with Nottingham.
