Mr Straw's House
An ordinary house - extraordinary home.  This modest semi-detached Edwardian house was the family home of well-to-do grocers William and Florence Straw from 1923. It is remarkable because the Straws’ two sons preserved it almost unaltered till it came to the National Trust in 1990.

The interior with its 1920s wallpaper, heavy Victorian furniture and household objects provides a rare glimpse into interwar lower middle-class life. There are displays of family costume, letters and photos and a typical suburban garden. Our room guides tell the stories of the family and the times they lived in.    Also, a different temporary exhibition each year - 2010 "Dressing the Straw Family".

20th and 21st March 2010

If you're visiting our areas of countryside you will also benefit from free parking at all of the car parks which give access to hundreds of miles of coastline and thousands of acres of the most amazing countryside that England, Wales and Northern Ireland have to offer. All you need to do is display a copy of the ‘Bonus Time’ voucher in your vehicle.  We're giving everyone in the country a bonus this spring by opening our doors for free on the weekend of 20-21 March 2010.

The ‘Bonus Time’ initiative, launched by the Trust’s Director General, Fiona Reynolds and Chairman, Simon Jenkins, is a spring gift to the nation and offers everyone the perfect excuse to get out in the fresh air and discover the great outdoors.

From exploring one of the 300 special places we care for - which include many of the UK's most spectacular gardens, to striding out into the vast swathes of countryside and 1000kms of coastline, the free weekend offers the chance for everyone to visit somewhere special.

'This is the perfect excuse to discover what’s on your doorstep, perhaps re-visit somewhere you pass regularly or explore somewhere totally new.'

All pay for entry properties, countryside and coastal car parks that are normally open over 20 - 21 March will be participating in the offer.

All you need to do to benefit from the offer is visit the National Trust website and download the voucher, then display it in your vehicle.
