Creswell Crags

Creswell Crags is a world famous archaeological site, set in a limestone gorge with caves and lake. It is home to Britain’s only known Ice Age Cave Art. This discovery is one of the most important prehistoric finds in the last decade. The art is thought to date to about 13,000 years ago and the images of birds, bison, deer and horse provide a glimpse into the rich culture and fascinating life of our distant relatives.

Creswell is an ideal place for families to visit as it offers open spaces for younger children to explore, as well as the exceptional cave tours for which Creswell is renowned.

A new centre for the Ice Age has been created.  The exhibition spaces house state of the art displays and interactive elements to engage visitors in entertaining learning. Cave tours run on weekends and school holidays. Touring exhibitions and fun family events and run throughout the year. Please see our events leaflet or website for more information.

Mills and Chimneys
4th June 2010

Join us for a musical celebration of Derbyshire at the Mills and Chimneys concert.

A group of six
talented musicians from Derbyshire - David Gibb, Lucy Ward, Elly Lucas, Julian Butt, Mike Smith and Sarah Matthews - are working together on a series of acoustic concerts, which will celebrate the history and heritage of Derbyshire. They’ve written 6 new songs which will be performed at concerts taking place in venues across the county during the Derbyshire Literature Festival.  David and his fellow musicians deliver an enthusiastic performance with an upbeat folk inspired sound, guaranteed to get you tapping your feet!

They will also be performing songs written by the winners of our Festival lyric writing competition which we launched earlier in the year. We asked people to write lyrics for a song inspired by Derbyshire. Sources of inspiration included the  landscape, places, people, and local history.

Joel Williams, from Chesterfield, was the winner of the under 16's category, and Jeremy Duffield, from Heanor, winner of the over 16's category. Their winning lyrics have been set to music by David Gibb and will be performed at the concerts. The songs will be available on a special Mills and Chimneys: songs of Derbyshire CD.
