Creswell Crags

Creswell Crags is a world famous archaeological site, set in a limestone gorge with caves and lake. It is home to Britain’s only known Ice Age Cave Art. This discovery is one of the most important prehistoric finds in the last decade. The art is thought to date to about 13,000 years ago and the images of birds, bison, deer and horse provide a glimpse into the rich culture and fascinating life of our distant relatives.

Creswell is an ideal place for families to visit as it offers open spaces for younger children to explore, as well as the exceptional cave tours for which Creswell is renowned.

A new centre for the Ice Age has been created.  The exhibition spaces house state of the art displays and interactive elements to engage visitors in entertaining learning. Cave tours run on weekends and school holidays. Touring exhibitions and fun family events and run throughout the year. Please see our events leaflet or website for more information.

THIS IS A PAST EVENT

FREE Celebration Event
26th and 27th  June 2010

Creswell Crags invites you all to a FREE event to celebrate one wonderful year in the new visitor centre.

This time last year the final preparations were being put in place for a spectacular ceremony as Creswell Crags was to open its doors to the public. One year on to mark the momentous occasion and say a big thank you to all our supporters and customers Creswell Crags has organised a special FREE event.

Karl will be hosting free drop in sessions on Sunday 27th June, where he will be using Ice Age techniques to make flint tools.

We have some inspirational artists and crafts people lined up to dazzle the public with demonstrations and the opportunity to purchase one off personal pieces. Sheffield born sculptor Oliver Meller will be demonstrating his stone carving with local natural wood and stone to depict natural forms, and local wildlife that dwell in and on the South Yorkshire Moors.

Local crafters Inspiration 21 introduce have-a-go felt making to visitors. Felt making is still practiced by nomadic peoples in Central Asia to make their movable Yurt tents waterproof. Two examples of nomadic tribes’ shelter a Yurt and a Tepee will house storytelling and art activities for creative types.

Get in touch with your inner cave person as you have a go at dressing Ice Age style and have tribal markings painted onto your face by our professional face painter. Once you look the part you can have a go at making your own flint tools with expert flintknapper Karl Lee.

Over the weekend our director Ian Wall will be on hand to give guided tours of the exhibition and building.

Tours will also be running in to the caves. ‘Ice Age tours’ in to Robin Hood Cave will explore how we used to live in the Ice Age and ‘Rock Art tours’ in to Church Hole Cave will give you the chance to see the wonderfully skilled images carved onto the walls and ceilings. The only place where you can stand in the footsteps of your artistic ancestors.

With spring in the air the landscape at Creswell Crags has taken on a truly magical beauty. The surrounding woodland pathways are dotted with pretty primroses and woodland flowers; the perfect setting for a family walk.

Time:  10:00am – 5:00pm
