Life is Very Sweet
Until March 2011

Jane Wildgoose’s installation, Life is Very Sweet, is an installation of beautiful sugar flowers combined with examples of porcelain, portraits, and garden sculpture from the Portland Collection.
The exhibition explores the complicated 18th century conventions for serving dessert. At this time dessert courses were often served in rooms overlooking elegant gardens, accompanied by theatrical table settings made from sugar work, porcelain, flowers, temples and urns. Desserts included conserves, pâtes de fruits, jellies, compotes, brandy fruits, gaufres, elaborate ices, coffee wafers, chocolate puffs and strong liquers.
