Nine Men's Morris A Creswell Crags Medieval Mystery
On Saturday 11th December and running until Spring 2011 Creswell Crags launches its Winter Exhibition and delves into a medieval mystery!
Exhibiting one of the most puzzling finds ever discovered at Creswell Crags, a medieval board game, this winter’s special exhibition is quite literally a Medieval Mystery!
The board which is carved onto a block of limestone was used to play the popular strategy game Nine Men’s Morris. The game was unearthed during 2006 excavations outside Church Hole Cave by Sheffield University. Its discovery provides a glimpse into medieval activity at the Crags. The exhibition explores who might have owned and played this long forgotten game.
You can also have a go at playing Nine Men’s Morris yourself on our giant interactive board situated in the gallery. Find out who is the medieval game champion in your family.
