THIS IS A PAST EVENT
8th to 23rd April 2011
Starring: Alistair McGowan as John the teacher & Clare Foster as Carol the Student
Electrifying dialogue and blazing emotion create a riveting play in which college professor John, played by Alistair McGowan and his female student Carol, played by Clare Foster, become embroiled in a war of words that takes a dangerous turn.
Oleanna explores the destructiveness of miscommunication and excessive political correctness. It is a play about academic politics, student/teacher relationships and sexual harassment. As the power perilously shifts in this intelligent, vitriolic two-hander, language is used as both a tool and a weapon. Oleanna was one of the most controversial plays of the 1990’s, splitting audiences and sparking debate on sexual exploitation and gender politics. Now in the 21st Century whose side will you take, if indeed there is a side to be taken?
Best known for the BAFTA winning 'The Big Impression', Alistair McGowan returns to Nottingham after his success in The Mikado at the Theatre Royal in his first dramatic stage role in the city since appearing in ‘Kafka's Dick’ and ‘Endgame’ at Nottingham Playhouse in the late 1990’s. Other theatre work includes ‘Little Shop of Horrors' (Duke of York's Theatre - for which he received an Olivier nomination) 'Merry Wives: The Musical' (RSC), ‘Measure for Measure’ (for Thelma Holt) and 'Cabaret' (Lyric Theatre). Television Appearances include 'Bleak House' (BBC One), 'Mayo' (BBC One) 'Who Do You Think You Are?' (BBC One) and 'Have I Got News For You' (BBC One).
Oleanna marks Clare Foster’s Nottingham debut. Her stage work includes ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ and ‘Love on the Dole’ (Bolton Octagon) and The White Witch in ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ (West Yorkshire Playhouse). Clare is best known as The Bill’s PC Millie Brown, a character she played for 19 months.
