Creswell Crags

Creswell Crags is a world famous archaeological site, set in a limestone gorge with caves and lake. It is home to Britain’s only known Ice Age Cave Art. This discovery is one of the most important prehistoric finds in the last decade. The art is thought to date to about 13,000 years ago and the images of birds, bison, deer and horse provide a glimpse into the rich culture and fascinating life of our distant relatives.

Creswell is an ideal place for families to visit as it offers open spaces for younger children to explore, as well as the exceptional cave tours for which Creswell is renowned.

A new centre for the Ice Age has been created.  The exhibition spaces house state of the art displays and interactive elements to engage visitors in entertaining learning. Cave tours run on weekends and school holidays. Touring exhibitions and fun family events and run throughout the year. Please see our events leaflet or website for more information.

Dec 2011: A Winter Wonder Crags

10th - 11th & 17th – 18th December 2011

Make your Christmas magical with a free family fun day at Creswell Crags.

Creswell Crags is the perfect setting to start your festive season this year with a bit of sparkle with Father Christmas, live music, crafts and festive food.

Father Christmas will be taking a break from his very busy winter schedule to visit us in his magical Ice Age Grotto here at Creswell Crags. Join him in his cosy grotto where he’ll be waiting to hear all your Christmas wishes. His elves will be on hand to help you make lots of crafts and decorations to take home for your friends and family.

Be entertained by the wonderful Creswell Colliery Brass Band (11th December) playing festive tunes and by the renowned Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir (18th December) singing your favourite carols creating a wonderful Christmassy atmosphere every Sunday.

The stunning wintery views make our café the perfect setting to warm yourselves, with a selection of festive treats after a walk around the gorge or trip down Robin Hood’s Cave. For those last minute extras, our interesting gift shop is the perfect place to explore for unusual stocking fillers and unique special gifts.
