Creswell Crags

Creswell Crags is a world famous archaeological site, set in a limestone gorge with caves and lake. It is home to Britain’s only known Ice Age Cave Art. This discovery is one of the most important prehistoric finds in the last decade. The art is thought to date to about 13,000 years ago and the images of birds, bison, deer and horse provide a glimpse into the rich culture and fascinating life of our distant relatives.

Creswell is an ideal place for families to visit as it offers open spaces for younger children to explore, as well as the exceptional cave tours for which Creswell is renowned.

A new centre for the Ice Age has been created.  The exhibition spaces house state of the art displays and interactive elements to engage visitors in entertaining learning. Cave tours run on weekends and school holidays. Touring exhibitions and fun family events and run throughout the year. Please see our events leaflet or website for more information.

29 Oct 11: Gore in the Gorge

29th October 2011

Spook yourself silly with an eerie Gore in the Gorge night followed by scary stories told inside Robin Hood’s Cave this Halloween.

An area steeped in myths and legends, Creswell Crags will be playing host to a professional storyteller who will bring the spooky, ghostly and ghoulish alive for the atmospheric event on Saturday 29th October 2011.  Creswell Crags learning officer promised a spine-tingling night of ghoulish fun in an historic setting - perfect for the Halloween season.

“The Gorge is steeped with all sorts of stories and superstition. We are really excited to be able to deliver this event in such an exciting setting,” she said.  “We believe that the caves have had a long tradition of providing a stage for storytelling. It’s great to be using these caves as they would have been used thousands of years ago.”

Visitors are invited to add to the atmosphere by coming in costume - sensible footwear must be worn.  There will also be a prize for the best costume and opportunity for face painting.

There will be two sessions for the event, held at 6.00 pm and 7.00 pm. Light refreshments will be served on the evening.

Tickets for the Gore in the Gorge event are priced £12 for adults and £8 for children.  They can be purchased on site or by calling 01909 720378.  Email info@creswell-crags.org.uk or visit www.creswell-crags.org.uk for more information.
