Southwell Workhouse

About this property

Explore the most complete workhouse in existence and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere as the audio guide (based on archive records) brings the 19th-century inhabitants back to life. Find out about poverty through the years with the help of the interactive displays, then meet the Reverend Becher, the founder of The Workhouse, in the introductory film. Discover the segregated work yards, day rooms, dormitories, master's quarters and cellars, then see the recreated working 19th-century garden and food the paupers would have eaten.

Family visits

Discover more about the history of the building through the audio tour (suitable for age 7 and above) and try your hand at the "The Master's Punishment" - throw the dice in each room to find out what your punishment or reward is! You can also try on costumes - from clogs and waistcoats to bonnets and aprons - and have a go at building the Workhouse with a large jigsaw model. Younger visitors can also use the interactive computers to find out where the nearest workhouse to their home is.
