THIS IS A PAST EVENT
30th November 2011
Local children need not miss out on a day’s education on Wednesday, 30 November. We are opening our interactive galleries to families across the region FREE OF CHARGE.
Public Sector workers will be on strike during this day, resulting in schools throughout the country closing for the day. To help ease the burden on families looking for somewhere to take the children, families wishing to take up this fabulous “one off” offer need to apply for tickets on a first come first served basis. Send an email to education@makingit.org.uk as soon as possible, stating how many adults and children you require tickets for together with a contact name and telephone number. Applicants should also state whether they wish to visit in the morning (0900-12noon) or afternoon (1215-1500).
Making it! discovery centre has played host to thousands of school children and families since opening in 2002 – the interactive galleries take you through the journey of “making things” in a fully hands-on and interactive way. Find out how to make a soft drink, explore how the brain works and look at how things were made over 100 years ago and what inventions were successful. Explore different materials used in the “manufacturing process” and have a go at testing materials to the “max”. Do you know how glass is made, where paper comes from and how stainless steel is made? The answer to all these questions is for you to find out. Test your skill on the “bottle filler” and chocolate packaging line. You will also find out how to sell, advertise, market and distribute products around the country – have a go at making a “fortune”. Try and beat the “Bar Code Challenge” and have a go on the virtual jigsaw puzzles to find out what was and is made locally. There’s lots to keep the whole family entertained so why not take up the offer and come and see for yourself – you will be amazed at how much fun you can have.
Hope you can make it!
All successful applicants will received a “timed slot” which is not transferable on the day. Admission to the galleries does not include access to “Parts Collection”. Visitors wishing to access this area to make a fully working model of their choice, will need to purchase a ticket at a reduced price of £2 per kit. Making it! will also be offering a discount on children’s meal deals during the day which should be purchased at the point of entry.
Buy a basket of component parts for the reduced price of £2 and you can make one of twelve different models to take home – what’s on offer, well you choose from : Torch, Rocket, Clock, Speed Machine, High Speed Flyer, Motorised Dragster, Fairground Carousel, Boat, Ball Launcher, Jitterbug, Live Wire Challenge and Plane Launcher.
