Nottingham's Market Square
Historically, the Old Market Square, right in the heart of Nottingham City Centre, forms a meeting place for the people of Nottingham and is also the location for local events, civic protests, royal visits, celebrations and public mourning.  It was redesigned and reopened in 2007.

Many of Nottingham's most defining moments have occurred here.

13th and 14th Oct 2017: Diwali Celebrations

13th & 14th October

Diwali Celebrations

A nine-foot mechanical elephant, music, dance, poetry and food will all feature in Nottingham City Council’s celebrations for Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, in the Old Market Square on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October.

On Friday, the elephant will parade around the Square, accompanied by dancers and musicians, and diya lamps made as part of an Arts Council England-funded project will be floated on the water feature.  During the weekend, there will be a large rangoli installation on display, rangoli workshops and readings from some of Nottingham’s best poets.

The Diwali celebrations will take place from 6 to 8.30pm on Friday and 12 to 4pm on Saturday.

In addition, there will be a curry market, also in the Square, from 11.30am to 9pm on Friday and 11.30am to 5pm on Saturday, offering a variety of curries, Indian sweets and kulfi ice creams.
