Review title : The Kite Runner, added by : Andrew (02/05/2013)
Event reviewed : General venue review
"We went to see the Kite Runner at the Nottingham Playhouse on Monday evening, what an absolutely brilliant play.
We are not regular Playhouse goers but based on this production I think that we will be going again soon.
The set was simple but very effective with Hanif Khan on the bongo drums gave you that atmosphere of Afghanistan.
The acting was faultless, we were absolutely gripped for the whole play and judging by the silence so were the rest of the audience, the cast got a standing ovation at the end.
This is a must see but hurry as I am sure it will get booked up very quickly.

Event reviewed : 26 Mar - 13 Apr 13: Philip Pullman`s I Was a Rat!
"Clever, poignant, interesting, colourful, enthralling ... most of all, entertaining! I was a Rat! is ideal Easter holiday activity for the whole family - our 8 year old son absolutely loved this production - the songs, the story the costumes - and so did we. With some laugh out loud moments, as well as a few tear-jerking scenes, this is one play that you cannot miss! If you haven't seen it yet - book your tickets today."

Review title : Happy Families?, added by : Rob (05/02/2013)
Event reviewed : 26 Jan - 16 Feb 2013: Joking Apart
"Joking Apart is one of Alan Ayckbourn's so far 76 plays and is a study of a happy couple over a period of 12 years (until their daughter's 18th birthday).
While the couple, Richard and Anthea are obviously happy together throughout that time, the play is more a study of the way their friends relate to them and how envious of their lives they become, from the guy who introduced them and wished he'd asked Andre out himself himself, to the business partner and his wife jealous of Anthea and the local vicar who has a crush on Anthea while his wife is slowly losing the plot.
All of them want what Anthea and Richard have, while, barring the odd declaration of love, the couple remain blissfully unaware of the thoughts of those around them, simply remaining happy with their lot.
Well acted throughout, while there are a few big laughs, as you'd expect from Ayckbourn, this is not a laugh a minute play, being more of an insight into people's lives and how they interact.
As ever, The Playhouse is a fantastic venue in which to experience live theatre, with friendly, helpful staff and a great atmosphere."

Review title : A not to be missed Xmas event!, added by : Lisa (04/12/2012)
Event reviewed : 30 Nov - 19 Jan: Robin Hood & The Babes in the Wood
"Robin Hood & Babes in the Wood sees the triumphant return of Kenneth Alan Taylor in the role of Nurse Nelly Noggins - and what a return it was! With a cast full of well-known Playhouse favourites, including John Elkington, who seems to be constantly on stage there at the moment, this fun-packed, hilarious production is just what was needed to get the festive season started. Being press night, the audience was made up of a slightly older crowd than normal but that didn't stop them getting down to Gangum Style - time and time again! There is something about the Playhouse that immediately makes you feel like you are with friends - if you are looking for somewhere to take the family for a Christmas treat this year - I would definitely recommend this panto. Absolutely brilliant ... again!!"

Review title : Flashback To The Footballing '70s, added by : Rob (12/10/2012)
Event reviewed : 5th to 20th Oct 2012: Diary of a Football Nobody
"Whether you are a football fan, remember the 1970s and how Nottingham used to be, or simply are a fan of human drama, this play has something for you.
Based on a book by former Notts County player Dave McVay and scripted by local writer William Ivory, the play harks back to simpler times when a top footballer was paid around the same as a supervisor at Raleigh and would live in the same neighbourhood he grew up in, perhaps having a 2nd job to make ends meet.
The main character "McVay", played with gusto by Perry Fitzpatrick, takes us on a journey through his life, on and off the pitch, ably assisted by an excellent cast, including The Bill's elder statesman Eric Richard as the legendary Jimmy Sirrel, inpenetrable Glaswegian accent and all.
Plenty of laughs, tears and a couple of friendly boos (when references are made to certain former players) create an excellent play at this great venue; if you are easily offended by swearing however, this may not be for you.

Review title : Another triumph, added by : Lisa (07/09/2012)
Event reviewed : 31 Aug - 22 Sept '12: The Importance of being Earnest
"We were lucky enough to be given tickets for press night and, not being an Oscar Wilde fan, I wasn't sure what to expect. I'd heard nothing but good things about this particular play, so had high hopes of an enjoyable evening. I was not disappointed. The acting from all involved was absolutely superb - the play, with it's twists, turns and laughs was brilliantly executed and, as usual at the Playhouse, the scenary was simple but extremely effective.
Whether you are familiar with The Importance of Being Earnest or just fancy a good night out, I cannot recommend this play highly enough - go and see it!"

Review title : The kids will love it!, added by : Lisa (17/07/2012)
Event reviewed : 13 Jul - 11 Aug 2012: Grandpa in my Pocket
"Before the show started, the question on the lips of all the adults was "how on earth are they going to shrink Grandpa on stage?". Without wanting to give too much away, it was done with the very clever use of puppets and a lot of dashing around the stage! Having only seen the TV show a couple of times, I wasn't particularly familiar with the characters but the cast did a great job of introducing everyone and the kids in the audience seemed to know who everyone was. This is the first time Grandpa in my Pocket has been done on the stage and it didn't take long to get into the swing of the show - the songs in particular were very catchy and the scenery and use of props was excellent.
I'd definitely recommend this show for all ages - my 7 year old son and I had a great time and I think they've done a great job of transferring the concept from TV to stage. Well worth booking tickets for."
