Worksop's history takes back to Anglo-Saxon times and was granted a Royal Charter back in 1296.
It's architectures is dominated by Worksop's Augustinian Priory of St Cuthbert and St Mary, which was founded in 1103. Today, the surviving part of the Priory consists of the Nave, Western Front and Twin Towers, which date from the 2nd half of the 12th century.
Worksop's development was influenced first by agriculture and later by industries, particularly mining. The town was boosted by the building of the Chesterfield Canal and the arrival of the Great Central Railway.
