November 2019

The Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club is just a place for golfers right?  It has the kudos of being the only 36 hole golf complex in Nottingham and I’d heard that it was quite swish and only 6 miles from the City Centre but, as a non-golfer, I didn’t think there would be anything there to interest me.

Apart from the golfing, it seems that I was wrong on lots of levels.  For instance, I had no idea that, beyond the 18 hole golf courses, there lies a boutique hotel with 30 individually styled bedrooms, as well as a conference venue and a restaurant … and you don’t have to be a member to get through the gates.  Set in 340 acres, the Nottinghamshire is surrounded by beautiful countryside, which offers a stunning backdrop to the contemporary clubhouse and hotel.  There is plenty of free parking on site and all the facilities have good accessibility, which is useful to know, as my review partner today has mobility issues.

Something that immediately struck me was the warm welcome we received from staff and club members alike.  I think some golf clubs have the unfortunate reputation of appearing a bit unfriendly and elitist but this certainly isn’t the case here.

Hotel

‘The Residence’ is, quite frankly, an absolute gem of a boutique hotel.  Its 30 bedrooms are all individually designed, so you could find yourself sleeping in The Library, with its book wallpaper and vaulted ceiling, or a room with its own outdoor terrace.  Whichever décor takes your fancy, every room is delightful, with outstanding attention to detail and an overall feeling of pure indulgence.  It is quite obvious that no expense has been spared and the quality shines through.  There are rooms to suit all occasions, including a fantastic Bridal Suite inspired by Tiffany & Co, with its own roll-top bath and lounge area, as well as family rooms which can accommodate up to 4 guests.

Dining

As food is always on my mind, I was keen to find out more about the dining facilities.  The Dining Room is light and airy, with windows galore overlooking the golf course and an outdoor patio area if you fancy a bit of al fresco eating.  The menus are seasonal and offer a variety of dishes from Herb Crusted Lamb Rump to a Gourmet Nottinghamshire Burger, as well as vegetarian options.  There is also a 2 course Lunchtime Special for £16, with hearty favourites such as homemade lasagne and a Cumberland ring served with mash, garden peas and onion gravy.

The Clubhouse Menu offers bites that are a bit lighter but still very filling!  My carved ham sandwich with English mustard and sliced tomato was substantial and Adrian’s 6oz Clubhouse Burger, with its chips in a metal basket was large enough to fill most bellies.  Both meals were freshly prepared and very tasty and reasonably priced at £4.95 and £9.95 respectively.  The service we received was excellent and the food arrived quickly.

The Nottinghamshire does a Sunday Lunch carvery but they advise that you book in advance  as it is very popular and there is also a very nice Clubhouse Bar next to the restaurant, where you can grab coffee and a cake, as well as light bites.

Conference and Banqueting

Corporate and party guests are well catered for here too, with reasonable day delegate rates and superb meeting and banqueting facilities.  If you’re looking for a meeting, party of wedding venue, it’s well worth checking out The Nottinghamshire as the rooms, once again, are stylish and modern (no nasty 1970s hotel carpets here!) and the largest can accommodate up to 150.

Golfing

I can’t really comment on the golfing facilities but, to my layman’s eye, they looked pretty good and the people who were out playing in the rain obviously think so too!

Verdict

So, is the Nottinghamshire Golf and Country Club worth a visit?  Definitely.  The food is good, the atmosphere is lovely and, for a townie like me, it’s nice to be out in the countryside.  The hotel is certainly worth considering too, if you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Nottinghamshire.
